FERTILE UNDERGROUND

Welcomes You

Fertile Underground began from a desire to improve our own health & spiritual life through local gardening, and grew into a community movement. Our own improved health inspired us to grow from our original Communal Garden into founding a Worker-Cooperative to provide a way of Right Livelihood for devoted members. We have now accomplished a quarter decade of operating a small Grocery store in what was a "food desert" for 20 years before.

Fertile Underground

Fertile Underground was conceived by a group of artists conversing about ways to directly address the issues of food access, personal health in modern life, creative process, and connection to nature.

OPEN DAILY 8am-9pm

Excepting Sundays when we close at 7pm.

DIRECTIONS to Our Store

We've got bulk nuts from Virgina & Spanish Peanut Company on Dexter Street. Oats & grains from Bob's Red Mill. Bulk herbs, packaged tea and more from Farmacy Herbs. Also, four kind coffee beans ground up for you on the spot, from Equal Exchange. Cafe has an entirely new menu, travel HERE to see that!

BE AWARE: Time is Changing So Fast at the Grocery, that What You See Here is only a Mirage of What It Used to Look Like!

Coop

To provide reliable and ethical income, we organize as a worker-cooperative, in which each member is directly involved.

Mobile

Many areas of Providence do not have proper access to fresh produce on a regular basis. We plan to bring fresh vegetables on the road directly to places where they are needed.

Cafe

Our Cafe is open for Breakfast & Lunch serving fresh and healthy food.

Services

The Fertile Underground consists of a variety of skilled tradesfolk, from landscapers to carpenters, muralists to yoga experts, snow-plows to make-up artists.

Garden

In Our Communal Garden everyone who shares the work, shares the harvest. No individual squares, but rather a cohesive small farm. From "under-utilized" lots to urban homesteads.

Grocery

The Fertile Underground are adapting the CSA model to work in a new way, something we call Community Supported Grocery.
